How to amuse your muse on a cold day...

As arctic air freezes most of the North and Northeast of the country many of us are staying in as much as possible. Yesterday we had a few snow flurries, a small dusting but not much else. This morning the roads were icy with a touch of white. Taking the dog out to pee was an adventure!

Meanwhile... i have had to move my art supplies from the sunporch studio into the living room Way too cold to work out there - so cold that my paper clay froze!

Paper clay pendants drying before they can be painted. During cold damp weather they take about 3 days to dry. Patience is not one of my virtues but i do love that paper clay is eco-friendly and does not need to be fired.

My muse has been having fun creating a few new spirit dolls with the seashells and driftwood  found on Plum Island, Sandy Point Beach and Winter Island.
These pictures are not the best. Will be taking more when these are finished. They will be residing at The Witchery on Pickering Wharf, Salem MA sometime soon.

Before i start a spirit doll i usually have some sort of intention. I may get inspired by one something i want to use in the piece or just a thought. Yesterday while deciding what to work with i pulled the Angel card BIRTH. Aha... OK.. thank you for that inspiration!

I found two huge broken lobster claws (or are they crab? over on the beaches by Plum Island. Something so cool about broken shells. Love incorporating them into my work. It looks like it could be some sort of nest or womb for a sea babe. So inside there is a tiny clay head. Though you really cannot see it.

The moon shells also have sea babes inside them. I love love love finding these moon shells. They symbolize the moon, prosperity and infinity. And they are stunning. We have bowls of them all over the place since we started going to those beaches. Hoping to create some jewelry with them as well. My muse is on overwhelm with all these shell ideas!

Moss and sand were added along with freshwater pearls, Czech glass beads, shimmering threads and a few other shells.

Spiritually pearls soothe the body, mind and soul while healing negativity. They are a symbol of rebirth, birth, new beginnings. The Chinese believe pearls aid in fertility as the help balance the body’s natural rhythms and hormone levels with lunar cycles. They are considered yin and a sign of the Moon.

Still not finished but getting there.

Not the best photo but it was night and i used my phone. She should be photographed hanging on a wall. When she is over at the Witchery there will be a proper photo taken. Still working on her name. Perhaps it will just be Birth. Is that too boring? She has three babes, two are in moon shells and the other is still in her lobster claw womb.

Another lobster claw babe in progress. This one is taking longer. Using driftwood and a branch i found. The hardest part of these is trying to figure out how to hang them. I am not a left brain person!

Today the winds are brutal so we will be staying in with short dog walks. Hoping to finish these pieces soon. My paper clay pendants are finally dry and ready to paint. Looking forward to making a mess!

Swan Lake....

Yesterday there were 5 swans gliding across the water at Collins Cove in Salem MA. A magical sight and omen! Way too difficult to photograph them with my phone.

Swans represent magic especially winter magic. They are cold weather birds. And they mate for life. How romantic!

So many fairy tales have swans in them - no wonder since they are so ethereal and seem to come from another realm. This lovely website goes into details about Swan totems and the symbolism of swan magic. Love these messages! https://dreamingandsleeping.com/swan-spirit-animal-symbolism-and-meaning/

I have seen a few swans over at Derby Wharf but never here at Collins Cove. So i take it as a good omen that these magical beings, perhaps angels appeared.

Swan Soul Mates Tea Infuser

Genuine semiprecious Pink Rose Quartz with bronze swan couple charm on a stainless steel tea ball infuser. Just in time for Valentine's Day!

Rose Quartz is known as the stone of love - all types of love! Unconditional love, romantic love, spiritual love, self-love, family love, love of mankind and Angelic love. It is known to calm the mind and relief stress. Wearing Rose Quartz is like taking an ethereal bubble bath. It is also said to be a stone of fertility.

bits and bobs

During this cold snap my muse has been playing with paper clay again. Who knew it would freeze if left out in the sun porch studio?!  I love working with it since you do not have to fire it. It is also eco-friendly unlike polymer clay - Fimo or Sculpey which are made from PVC which is toxic.

Of course in this weather these pieces are taking forever to dry. So i cannot paint them until they are completely dry. Patience is not one of my virtues!

I have been adding pieces of seashells from my beach excursions. Almost feel as if these are morphing into artifacts from Atlantis! Some will be made into pendants and others into spirit dolls.

Get out your ice skates!

Monday and Tuesday we had bitter cold temps around 4 degrees with wicked wind. The snow that came on Saturday and Sunday turned to ice and walking the dog was quite the challenge.

The bike trail we walk to Collins Cove Beach with our dog each day was an ice rink so Quan Yin was not happy that she had a mini walk.

After being away for 7 years it is taking time to get acclimated to cold weather. Remembering to wrap up, wear gloves and a hat takes some getting use to.
Keeping the house warm by adding curtains and plastic on the porch windows was something we did not have to do in Alexandria VA. Things like wrestling with frozen trash cans, shoveling, pouring salt on the stairs and wearing socks 24/7 bring back memories of past winters.

However, i am loving winter! Something magical about this time of year. It makes one appreciate spring when it arrives! I am so grateful that we are not in Alexandria VA right now during this horrid government shutdown. So many small businesses suffer along with most people who live there. My heart goes out to all those who are waiting for this to resolve.

Being shut in is giving me more time to work on my new line of jewelry. More eco-friendly paper clay, seashells and sea themed baubles.

All jewelry and DIY art doll kits are on sale 13% OFF through February 28. No magic code needed. Just in time for Valentine's Day! Lots of romantic handcrafted pieces with semiprecious stones, crystals and Czech glass beads. Gift bag included. Free Shipping $40 and over.

Snow!!!!!!!!

Wooohoo! We finally got a big batch of snow over the weekend. We were at Sandy Point Beach and Plum Island on Saturday afternoon when the first snowflakes started to fall. It was a stunning sight to watch snowflakes over the ocean. And we even saw a Snowy Owl. WOW! Amazing day. My camera phone just could not capture that moment. Then again, you can't photograph magic most of the time.

Sandy Point Beach

Saturday afternoon, the city of Salem declared their infamous snow emergency with the Blue Light Parking ban in effect. This puts anyone who does not have a driveway into pure panic mode as cars must be removed off the streets or be towed. There is limited parking available at the public garages so it is a race to get a spot before they fill up. Thankfully we now are living in a home that has a driveway so i no longer have panic attacks when i see the blue lights flashing! https://www.salem.com/traffic-and-parking-department/pages/snow-emergency-parking-locations

Our snow turned to ice on Sunday so walking the dog was a challenge. She was not happy about it either therefore these photos are not the best.

I found some great fluffy yarn at the LifeBridge Thrift Shop in Salem and made some pom poms for my boots. My inner child is loving them!

The bike path has not been plowed yet. Too hard to walk to Collins Cove Beach today!

Walking on the tundra

Brrrr! It is cold out. No snow yet here in the Witch City but the beach is frozen. Quan Yin bravely walks across the tundra in search of penguins. We are hoping for snow to arrive on Friday.

It was so cold this week that my paper clay froze in my sunporch studio! Until things get warmer i am forced to work in the living room which adds a bit of chaos and mess. It looks like a bead shop exploded in here! No complaints - it is warm and i have a few fur kids keeping me company.

A sneak peek of wire wrapped seashells with semiprecious stones & pearls. The photos do not do these justice. Will be doing a proper photo shoot soon. Meanwhile i have created a section in our online boutique for Valentines Day gift ideas. https://whispersoftheofae.com/valentines-day-gifts

The Million Dollar Question...

Many folks have been asking when i will begin taking new K9 patients here on the North Shore again at Four Paws Acupuncture. It has taken me much longer than i hoped to get my animal acupuncture business back up and running since our move from Alexandria VA. A few health challenges, unpacked boxes and hoops to jump through. As John Lennon sings..."Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

I had to surrender and just decided to go with the flow! Hopefully i will be announcing our launch date sometime in February. Meanwhile we are in the process of making changes to the website. You can follow us on the Four Paws Acupuncture Facebook page for updates on pet food recalls, events, classes and holistic pet care info. https://www.facebook.com/4PawsAcupuncture/

Wishing all a very happy long holiday weekend. Here is hoping the government opens back up ASAP and everyone recoups their back pay. I remember how difficult it was living in Alexandria VA during the last few shut downs for small businesses. Sending love to all!

Winter Island in the Winter

Just a few more photos of Winter Island from Sunday. Another cold day but we both needed some sea therapy to shake off the week!

Frozen tidepools

Can you see the sea fae dancing?

Found a few sea shells and pieces of driftwood. But it was way too cold to really look for much.

My new line of seashell jewelry & spirit dolls are still in the works. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile there is a big sale happening at our online boutique: https://whispersoftheofae.com

Ice Faeries at Collins Cove!

Brrrr! It was 12 degrees out this morning when my husband took our dog out. The beach at Collins Cove is frozen. Gorgeous ice sculptures created by the Ice Fae!

A few seashells but it was way too cold to take off my gloves and hunt for them!

Quan Yin Kali Wu in her pretty in pink coat. She is hoping for a big snow storm soon. (So am i!)

Wishing all a very magical Saturday from the Witch City, Salem MA!

A Rainy Saturday at the PEM

One of our favorite things to do in Salem is visit the Peabody Essex Museum. One of the perks of living in the Witch City is that residents can get in for free. So it is the perfect way to spend a rainy cold day.

The current exhibit is Empresses of the China's Forbidden City. Since my husband and i are both acupuncturists and trained in traditional Chinese medicine we have a bit of an obsession about all things Chinese. And this latest  show is filled with gorgeous art, kimonos and history.

My photos are not the best since you cannot use a flash in the museum.

My favorite Chinese deity - Kuan Yin, Avalokiteshvara also spelled Guan Yin, Quan Yin. (I love her so much we named our dog Quan Yin!) She is the goddess of compassion and mercy. Her name means She Who Hears the Cries of the World.

And no trip to the PEM is complete without roaming through their overpriced gift shop and drooling on the merchandise that one can only afford if they win the lottery!
