The Friendship of Salem Returns!

Salem's tall ship, The Friendship has been in Gloucester MA for three years being repaired. So she was not at her home, Derby Wharf, Salem MA when we moved back in the fall. 

Today she returned via tugboat as she has no masks or sails yet, in the pouring rain. Several of us greeted her waving white hankies and of course screaming WhooohooooOOooo! So happy to have her back. It brought tears to my eyes. Such a Salem treasure.

The crew had a hard time getting her docked. She hit one of the poles on the pier and i think that is when they decided not to try to turn her around to face the other direction. It was pouring rain and hard to see.

Repent or burn....

It's tourist season here in the Witch City - which means the hard core Christians are out once again in full force harassing people in lines at the  Salem Witch Museum and other attractions. 

These folks usually just appear during October, but for some reason they descended upon us today. Maybe because it is a state holiday - Patriot's Day and they knew Salem would be crowded? Who knows. I guess what i don't understand is... why are they so angry? Wasn't Jesus a nice peaceful hippie who loved everyone even if they were rejects? And are their protest really effective converting tourists, pagans and witches to their strict religion? Don't these people have anything better to do with their time?

Ironically today after strolling through Salem, we came home to find out that Notre Dame in Paris burned to the ground. So sad to lose such a historical treasure. I am grateful to have seen Notre Dame in Paris in 2001. Magical and very goth. Not sure how they could ever recreate it. Sending love and light to Paris.

Not too many seashells today. However we started to collect beach rocks to place around our house. Hoping today to make it to Sandy Point Beach or Plum Island in search of more moon snail shells and driftwood for my new line of jewelry. A hike through Winter Island Salem MA

If you follow this blog you must know by now that i am obsessed with Winter Island! It not only has two magical beaches but there is an old fort known as Fort Pickering that you can hike through.

"Fort Pickering is a 17th-century historic fort site on Winter Island in Salem, Massachusetts. Fort Pickering operated as a strategic coastal defense and military barracks for Salem Harbor during a variety of periods, serving as a fortification from the Anglo-Dutch Wars through World War II. Construction of the original fort began in 1643 and it saw use as a military installation into the 20th century. Fort Pickering is a First System fortification named for Colonel Timothy Pickering, adjutant general of the Continental Army and secretary of War in 1795. Today, the remains of the fort are open to the public as part of the Winter Island Maritime Park, operated by the City of Salem."

And i am eternally grateful that we were able to move back to Salem MA this 2018. Yes this year was a doozie for the entire planet... at least a few good things happened!

The Christmas Oyster....

Caution. Truth is stranger than fiction!

So the other day when i was gathering seashells on Waikiki Beach i found this gorgeous pink, purple and teal European Oyster Shell along with 3 bags filled with many more. (I am going to need a 12 step program soon for my seashell addiction.)

I have been taking them home and washing them so they don't stink up the studio or any art they are morphing into. When i picked up this shell i realized that it was still alive. OH NO! I do not want the wrath of the sea fae! So i put it in a glass bowl with some of the sea water that i have from this beach that is used in the Practical Magic Salem Sea Spell kits. 

And a few hours later the shell opened with the oyster inside. He's alive! (Or is it a she?) It was placed in my studio near the window so it could enjoy the full moon and maybe get some good vibes until i was able to bring it back to the beach. So for about 2 days we have had a pet oyster. We talked to it. Sang to it and apologized for the mishap.

And today, Christmas Eve we drove him/her back to Waikiki Beach and released it at high tide, wishing it well and thanking it - as well as apologizing! Who knows maybe this will turn into a children's book.

Rumor has it there will be snow tonight. Woohoo! A white Christmas in Salem is all i wanted this year.

Meet Our Resident Familiar

Meet Nubi juan Kenobi, my familiar and the snoopervisor of Practical Magic Salem. When we adopted Nubi his real name was Anubis - which is perfect for him since he does think he is a God and a dog. However, we did not really want the  Egyptian God of embalming and the dead roaming through our home we renamed him Nubi juan Kenobi. We adopted Nubi in Salem MA and he has been through 3 moves with us. 

Also known as The Boy, Pope Nubius, King Nubius, Count Poosula and Mr Poosehead depending on the day and his mood! Nubi is 16 and will be turning 17 in December. We share the same birthday. No shock there.

As you can see he has magnificent fangs - which seem to be growing as he ages.

Nubi loves to do yoga and hogs the mat whenever possible.

His new favorite spot is my sun porch studio where he sun bathes and makes sure that everything is running smoothly at Practical Magic Salem. He is so happy to be back in the Witch City where black cats are revered and loved!

Good Morning from the Witch City!

Nothing like a morning jaunt to Collins Cove for a whiff of the sea to wake me up. Love the sound of the laughing sea gulls and the lapping water. Such good therapy for the body, mind and soul. I am so grateful to be back in the Witch City!

I get some of my best inspiration for the jewelry and art i create from these walks. Maybe the sea faeries are helping me! Wouldn't it be great to have a mermaid costume and sit on the beach and wave to tourists?

Haunted Happenings Parade!

I was not able to take great photos of the Haunted Happenings Parade last evening. However, The Salem News has a great video of the event. Best float ever was the giant Bette Midler Hocus Pocus float by the National Parks Service.

It was so good to be back in Salem to see the parade after being gone 7 long muggle filled years. This parade was one of the best ever. However, it should be mandatory that all who participate in it must wear costumes!!!!

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Wooohooo! Happy October. This photo was taken at Tendercrop Farm in Wenham MA. Not too far from Salem MA. We love going there on the weekends for fresh local veggies, plants, flowers and of course pumpkins.

Woohoo! I am so excited. My line of Spirit Dolls are now residing at The Witchery on Pickering Wharf in Salem MA. They are so happy to be in a place where people believe in magic and appreciate bizarre art!

All have been created using eco-friendly paper clay that i hand sculpted, painted. I used recycled fabrics, sari ribbon, yarn, feathers, moss and semiprecious stones with glass beads. Many of these have taken months to make. Some started off completely different and then morphed into who they are today.
